No. As of 2026, the "No Guide, No Trek" policy is strictly enforced. You must hire a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency. Checkpoints at Monjo will turn you back if you’re solo. The only "solo" part allowed is that you can now apply for permits as a single traveler, but you still have to take a guide with you.
Expect to spend between $1,300 and $2,500 for a standard 14-day trek.
You need two main permits. You don't need the old TIMS card anymore; it’s been replaced by a digital system.
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: ~$20–$25 (Payable in Lukla).
Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: ~$30 (Payable in Monjo or Kathmandu).
It’s a strenuous hike, not a climb. You don't need ropes or ice axes. If you can walk 5–7 hours a day with a light pack for two weeks, you can do it. The "hardness" comes from the altitude, not the terrain. 70% of it is mental stamina.
Probably a little. Most people get a headache or feel winded.
The Rule: If you have a persistent headache, nausea, or dizziness—STOP.
The Cure: Drink 4L of water a day, avoid alcohol, and don't skip acclimatization days in Namche and Dingboche. If it gets worse, descend immediately.
They are a mess. Flights are frequently delayed or canceled due to weather.
Tip: In peak season (April/May), flights often move to Ramechhap Airport (a 4-5 hour drive from KTM) to ease traffic. Always keep 2 buffer days at the end of your trip so you don't miss your flight home.
